The Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) Checklist: 22 Points to Win Featured Snippets and AI Answers

-

This is a 22-point checklist for making your pages the source that answer engines quote: Google featured snippets and AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Copilot. Work through it page by page – content formatting, structured data, technical access, entity authority, and measurement – and you turn “we rank somewhere” into “we are the answer.” It is built for teams that already understand AEO and want a repeatable, do-this-now list.

If you need the concept first, start with our guide to what Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is and how it compares to SEO and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). This page is the checklist you run after that.

How to use this checklist

Pick one important page – a comparison, a buyer question, or a “how to” – and run all 22 points on it before moving to the next. The items are grouped into five stages; each stage compounds the one before it. None of it works without the first stage, so start there.

Sources and further reading

This checklist is grounded in platform documentation and recognized industry sources:

  1. Google Search Central – Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search.
  2. Google Search Central – Featured snippets and how they work.
  3. Schema.org – FAQPage, HowTo, Article, and Organization vocabulary.
  4. Google Developers – Introduction to structured data markup.
  5. Wikipedia – Generative engine optimization (origin and background).

Creating content that people find unique, compelling, and useful will likely influence your website’s presence in generative AI search in the long run more than any of the other suggestions in this guide.

Keep that first. The checklist below makes good content easy for engines to extract and trust; it cannot rescue thin content that says nothing new.

What you are optimizing for

AEO targets several answer surfaces at once. They reward slightly different things, but the checklist covers all of them.

Answer surface What wins it
Google featured snippets A ranking page with a concise, directly formatted answer (paragraph, list, or table)
Google AI Overviews Strong organic relevance plus clean structure and schema on an indexed page
ChatGPT and Copilot Authoritative, well-structured sources and a recognizable brand entity
Perplexity Fresh, clearly cited, quotable content the model can attribute

The 22-point AEO checklist

Stage 1: Answer-first content (1-6)

  1. Lead with the answer. Open each page with a direct 40 to 60 word answer to its main question, before any preamble.
  2. Ask the question in a heading. Put the primary query in the H1 or an H2, phrased the way people actually search or speak it.
  3. Cover the follow-ups. Use H2 and H3 question headings for the related “People also ask” questions, each with its own short answer.
  4. Format for extraction. Use short paragraphs for definitions, numbered steps for “how to”, a table for comparisons, and bullets for “best” or “types” queries.
  5. Add a clean definition block. Include a one to two sentence definition near the top for “what is” snippets.
  6. One answer per question. Never bury the answer mid-paragraph; a model lifts the clearest self-contained passage, so make it obvious.

Stage 2: Structured data (7-11)

  1. FAQPage schema on pages with genuine question-and-answer content.
  2. HowTo schema on step-by-step guides.
  3. Article schema with a named author, publish date, and modified date.
  4. Organization schema so engines recognize your brand as a real entity. Our AI visibility and schema work is built around this.
  5. Validate everything. Run the Rich Results Test and fix errors; broken schema is worse than none.

Stage 3: Technical and crawl access (12-15)

  1. Stay eligible for snippets. No noindex on the page and no data-nosnippet wrapper around the answer you want quoted.
  2. Let AI crawlers in. Allow GPTBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot, and ClaudeBot in robots.txt and at the CDN.
  3. Be fast and mobile-first. Healthy Core Web Vitals make content easy to render and parse. This is standard SEO hygiene that AEO depends on.
  4. Use semantic HTML. A logical heading hierarchy and clean markup help engines and screen readers alike.

Stage 4: Entity and authority (16-19)

  1. Keep your entity consistent. Same name, description, and details across your site, profiles, and knowledge bases.
  2. Show real expertise. Add author bylines, bios, and credentials for E-E-A-T.
  3. Earn third-party citations. Mentions on the sources answer engines already trust decide the close calls.
  4. Publish non-commodity content. Add original data, first-hand examples, or a clear point of view produced with disciplined content workflows.

Stage 5: Voice, freshness, and measurement (20-22)

  1. Optimize for voice and local phrasing. Answer conversational, full-sentence questions, and include location wording where the query is local.
  2. Keep it fresh. Update facts and the modified date; engines favor recency for anything time-sensitive.
  3. Track and iterate. Monitor featured-snippet wins, AI Overview appearances, and AI citations every month, then rework the pages that miss.

AI tools for SEO and AEO

You do not need many tools, but you do need one from each of three groups:

  • AI visibility and citation tracking – see where you appear and get cited across AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity. Options include Semrush’s AI tooling, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Profound, and Otterly.ai.
  • Content and schema optimization – structure pages and generate valid markup, using tools like Semrush, Surfer, and a schema validator.
  • Analytics and attribution – GA4 plus your CRM, configured to capture AI-referred traffic so you can tie snippets and citations to leads.

Tools show you the gap; the checklist above is how you close it.

How to measure AEO

Judge AEO by four signals: featured-snippet and “position zero” wins in Search Console, how often you appear in AI Overviews and AI answers, your AI share of voice versus competitors across a fixed set of prompts, and the traffic and conversions arriving from AI sources. Review monthly, and let the misses tell you which checklist items to revisit.

AEO Checklist FAQ

What is an AEO checklist? +
An AEO checklist is a repeatable list of steps that make a page the source answer engines quote - covering answer-first content, structured data, crawl access, entity authority, and measurement, so you win featured snippets and appear in AI answers.
How do you optimize for answer engines? +
Lead each page with a direct answer, format it for extraction, add and validate FAQPage, HowTo, Article, and Organization schema, keep AI crawlers allowed, strengthen your entity and author expertise, and track snippet and AI-citation wins monthly.
How do you get featured snippets? +
Rank on page one for the query, then give a concise, directly formatted answer - a 40 to 60 word paragraph, a numbered list, or a table - right where the question is asked. Clean structure and schema make the answer easy for Google to lift.
What is the difference between AEO and SEO? +
SEO works to rank a page in the results list; AEO works to be quoted inside the answer. AEO builds on the same foundation and adds answer-first structure, schema, and entity signals.
What AI tools help with SEO and AEO? +
Most teams combine an AI visibility tracker (such as Semrush AI tooling, Ahrefs Brand Radar, or Profound), a content and schema optimizer, and GA4-based attribution to connect AI traffic to leads.
